Tottenham press conference live: Antonio Conte on defeat, signing new attacker and Kulusevski

The Tottenham Hotspur boss is speaking to the media following the defeat gainst Aston Villa in the Premier League on New Years Day

Antonio Conte is holding his first press conference of 2023 following Tottenhams 2-0 home defeat against Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Spurs began the year with the visit of Unai Emerys Villa side and Conte named a starting line-up with Eric Dier benched with World Cup winner Cristian Romero returning to the team and Bryan Gil coming in for his first Premier League start to replace the injured Dejan Kulusevski.

After another sluggish and lacklustre first half, it became 10 games in a row that Tottenham have conceded first. The returning Hugo Lloris spilled a central Douglas Luiz shot and it fell to Ollie Watkins who teed up Emiliano Buendia to score.

Spurs looked out of ideas going forward and Villa duly scored again with a well-worked goal after Harry Kane lost the ball. John McGinn picked out Luiz with a incisive pass and he tucked it past Lloris.

Tottenham had no answers at the other end and were unable to find a way back into the match or the top four.

I was expecting this moment. Now we have to fight, strong, because the situation, we are there and in this league you can slip quickly.

From the first until the end the road is not so long and you can slip quickly. Im not scared, I believe in my work and I believe in these players, but dont give me things I cant promise you. This is only to give dreams and you need to be realistic. If you know the situation you face the moment in the right way.

For the potential of the club, I continue to repeat that we made a miracle. It happened why? Because we played only one competition with 12, 13 players and they didnt have injuries in the last 15 games and we played only the best players. Arsenal were only four points up and we finished 20 points less than Manchester City. We did a miracle and I knew the situation.

I was very clear with the club and in the summer people spoke about Tottenham as title contenders. From my experience it was a bit crazy to read this but you have to accept this. To become title contenders you need a solid foundation, 14-15 strong quality players and the young players to develop and every season you can add two players, but two players to invest 60m, 70m players to improve the level of your team.

People think that you arrive and you win in this way. If people are not used to this you need to create this situation, you need time and patience.

We have four players and we have Lucas and Gil, who is a young player but in my opinion he played a good game. Then you have Kane, Son, Kulusevski and Richarlison. If you have these injuries it becomes difficult. Sonny has to continue to improve and its difficult.

About the performance Im not disappointed. From the start to the end Ive seen the right committment and desire and intensity. The need to run. If you ask me football is a bit strange. If you ask me we dominated the game, in the first half we didnt create a chance to score because we found a team that defended really deep.

Then we are unlucky to concede a goal and we affected the belief of the players.

In the first half we played with good intensity. We didnt concede anything and we found a team that defended too deep and then we conceded this goal and then the confidence dropped for my players.

We have to know that our life is this. We have to fight every game for one point or for three points. This is the truth, especially when you are without two or three important players and have difficulties.

We have different characteristics. We dont have many players who are really good to beat the man. We dont have many creative players in our team. For sure today was really difficult to find space in the first half.

Im sure that if we dont concede the goal, we could win the game instead. The goal that we conceded killed us in confidence and in many situations for sure. You have to try and improve and develop these players and especially young players to be even stronger.

On conceding first again:We have conceded the first goal and for sure we try to play to score goals. There is an opponent like you that can score during the game. We understand very well that the league will be really really difficult for us.

We have to try to recover all the [injured] players and then we have to know that in every game we have to fight and show that we are strong. The league will be very difficult for us.

I want to be honest, I want to be very clear. I have said this to the club, I have said my opinions. The fans deserve the best. Maybe to stay in 5th is the best. Maybe 6th, 7th, 5th or 4th is the best.

Its the first time I was here in the new stadium, the atmosphere was amazing, playing in January and of course we won.

Usually they are scoring goals as well and offensively a good team. At home they are feeling strong, sometimes doing matches more open than normally and after an analysis of them we knew we had to play defensively strong and not concede many chances and we did that. They have very good players offensively with Harry Kane and Son and we knew that if we wanted to win we had to be defensively strong and defend deeper than normally I would like.

Today we are speaking about the match what was our level, playing against the top six and Tottenham, how could we compete and try to be competitive and try to deserve to win. Today I think we played very well defensively and we had chances to score and were clinical.

We spent yesterday here in London in the hotel and we wanted to show this afternoon that the match was our priority and the players showed that with their performance. They ran, they fought and they were so confident in the defensive moment.
